The Three Steps To Transform Your Life

Recently I wrote a guest post on Tiny Buddha titled How to Stop Worrying About the Future and Start Living Your Life Now.

Many people who read the post were inspired by my words.

But no post will please everyone and the post also received plenty of criticism.

Perhaps the most salient critical comment was the following:

You don’t have kids, do you? It’s not easy to just drop everything and do what you want to do. I understand what you’re saying but it’s easier said than done. I need my job to support my family. You got to give me more than, “don’t worry, and do what you want to do most in life”. You wouldn’t be saying these things if you had 3 kids and a wife to support.

On the one hand I recognize an excuse when I see one.

And I know that if it wasn’t “I can’t do X because I have kids”, it would be something else.

I’m too old.

Or I’m too young.

Or I don’t have the right education.

Etc. Etc. Etc.

On the other hand, it’s true that I don’t have kids.

And while I could respond to that comment myself, I’d prefer that someone who has kids responds.

Fortunately, the other day I noticed a powerful, inspiring message that my friend Jackson Gage had written on Facebook.

The story of his own personal transformation.

This was the response that I was looking for and a story that needs to be heard.

And Jackson’s message is valuable regardless of whether or not you have kids.

I reached out to Jackson and asked if I could share his message.

He responded with a resounding “Yes!”.

So here it is:

Three years ago I sold everything I owned and left my home in California to move my family onto a small tropical island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Surrounded by jungle and warm crystal clear waters.

What an experience it has been. I had never been to Kauai prior to moving there, shit, I’d never even been on a plane, but I knew that throwing myself into the unknown of life is a necessary ingredient on the road to self actualization.

I had no plan, I didn’t even land a place to live until the week prior to arriving. But I came, and I brought my daughters, and all of our lives have been changed forever.

I struggled, i learned, I grew and I conquered.

Financially, I had no plan, I was running on a full tank of faith trusting completely in the perfection of the universe. The cost of living on Kaua’i is higher than most places on earth.

For the first couple of years there, the struggle was real as fuck, as a family we were humbled…. and that was exactly why I sacrificed the world that I was so comfortable with….for growth… to show my children that material wealth cowers in the shadow of happiness.

Being happy and free is worth more than any money or material possessions on this earth.

After about 2 and a half years I began to hit my stride and not only was I happy, but I was attracting ample amounts of money into my life and what was once a struggle became….easy.

I’m not saying this to brag, I’m saying this to show that anything is possible if you have faith and stand strong in the pursuit of your vision.

With all of this being said, I found my comfort zone on the beautiful island kingdom of Kauai. I was comfortable. Over time, comfort has become my indicator that change is needed. I fiend for growth.

I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had on that island, and I’ve experienced the beauty of TRULY LIVING, and now…. it’s time to go.

Adventure awaits and opportunity calls. I’m returning to “the world” with a fresh set of eyes, ready to level up, again. I will never except comfort as a way of life.

Where you headed Jackson? …”America’s Finest City” …. and I’m ready to conquer the world ..

How awesome and inspiring is that story???!!!

Now Jackson is an amazing person, there’s no doubt about it.

But he’s not unique or special or extraordinary.

He simply followed the three steps to transform your life, the same steps that any of us can follow, regardless of our external situation.

So here they are:

The Three Steps To Transform Your Life

  • Clarity of Vision

Jackson had a clear vision of what he wanted in life for himself and his daughters. This is where many of us get tripped up. We either don’t know what we want in life or our energy is so divided that we dabble in lots of small things instead of committing to one, strong vision.

  • Courage to Take Risks

There’s no doubt that Jackson took some HUGE risks to pursue his vision. But there’s no other way to bring your vision to reality. Of course, many people get tripped up at this step – even if they know what they want in life, they don’t have the courage to actually go after it.

  • Willingness to Work Hard, Struggle, and Sacrifice

Jackson left his comfortable life behind. And then he worked hard, struggled and sacrificed for 2 and a half years. Most of us, though, have become too comfortable. We’re not willing to go through struggle and sacrifice to bring our vision to reality. But that IS what it will take – lots of hard work, lots of struggle, lots of sacrifice. There’s simply no other way.

Now, I want to be honest about one thing – following these three steps guarantees you NOTHING in life.

Life doesn’t work that way.

But failing to follow them does guarantee something.

It guarantees that you’ll stay stuck, stay comfortable, stay in a life that you don’t want to be in.

It guarantees that you won’t grow, that you won’t transform, that you won’t achieve what you want in life.

So the choice is yours.

You can take the necessary steps to transform your life.

Clarify your vision. Build your courage. Work hard, struggle, and sacrifice.

Or you can stay where you’re at.

You know what choice I made.

You know what choice Jackson made.

What choice will you make?

  1. great article Ed – I relate to all three steps – either taking them or not taking them. these three steps is very helpful plus the story of someone achieving success thereafter. I now know what I need to do – thanks! Question for you – do you have a big dream other than being a coach?

    1. Hi Teresah – Great to hear from you! How are you? In answer to your question, I have lots of big dreams but right now my focus is on my coaching business and on supporting my wife and mother in law (who both have some physical issues).
