BUILD YOUR EMAIL LIST (Part 1)

INTRODUCTION

So far in this course, we’ve covered the following:

  • Choosing a focus for your business
  • Building your primary business platform

Now you need to start building your email list. Unlike the first two steps, this step is not 100% under your control

At the same, building an email list is critical to your success as a Solopreneur. In fact, it’s so important that I’ve divived this lesson into two parts. 

And  I have a more comprehensive email list building guide – which I’ll tell you about in Part 2 of this step. 

WHY YOU NEED TO BUILD AN EMAIL LIST

Let’s start by talking about WHY you need to build an email list. Similar to your website, your email list is something that you own.

You can email people when you want to with very few restrictions. And unless you’re sending people spam, you can be assured that your email sending provider won’t shut down your account

Meanwhile, with YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc., you never know what they’ll do.

Secondly, you can reach a MUCH higher percentage of your subscribers via email than other methods. For example, if you send an email, close to 100% of your subscribers will receive it, and about 20-30% will open it.

On the other hand, if you post something on Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc), you’ll be lucky if even 5% of your contacts see your post. So email gives you much more control over your business AND higher levels of engagement compared to other forms of communication.

Now, before you start collecting emails, you need to create a lead magnet. Which is what we’re going to focus on in the rest of this lesson.

WHAT IS A LEAD MAGNET AND WHY YOU NEED ONE

A lead magnet is a free gift that you offer in exchange for someone’s email address (like this course!).

Your lead magnet is a key step in the process of building your email list (which we’ll cover in the following step).

Without a lead magnet, it’s virtually impossible to get people to subscribe to your email list. 

Trust me, I’ve tried.

Years ago, when I started my first online business, I tried to get people to sign up to my email list without using a lead magnet.

I tried something general like “subscribe to free updates”. Boring, right? And that’s how people reacted….with a big, fat YAWN!

I was lucky if I got one person a week subscribing to my email list. But once I finally created a lead magnet, I had dozens and dozens of people signing up to my email list every week.

WHAT TO OFFER AS YOUR LEAD MAGNET

So let’s first talk about what to offer as a lead magnet.

Here are some ideas for what you can offer as a lead magnet: 

  • Ebook or guide,
  • Checklist
  • Workbook
  • Email Course (like this one!)
  • Webinar
  • Cheatsheet
  • Free Trial (good for software)
  • Quiz/Survey

These are just some ideas…just google “lead magnet ideas” if you want more ideas. 

HOW TO CREATE A GREAT LEAD MAGNET

When it comes to creating a great lead magnet there’s one factor that matters more than anything else. 

Your lead magnet has to be directly related to the problem that your business solves.

Otherwise, you’re going to have a bunch of people who sign up for your lead magnet who will never buy from you. Which completely defeats the purpose of having a lead magnet and building an email list.

So think back to the problem that your planning to solve. And then create something that shows off your knowledge and expertise around that problem. 

Remember, your lead magnet is your first opportunity to display your expertise to your audience. So make sure that it does exactly that!

And if you get stuck, just look at what others in your niche offer as a lead magnet to inspire your own. 

BTW, the length of your lead magnet doesn’t matter. Personally I prefer longer lead magnets because they give me more opportunity to show of my knowledge and expertise. 

But there are plenty of Solopreneurs who are successful with shorter lead magnets. What matters is that you demonstrate your knowledge and expstise of the problem that your business solves.
