SOLOPRENEUR SUCCESS STEP 6
OFFER YOUR PRODUCTS OR SERVICES TO YOUR AUDIENCE
We’ve come to a critical point in your journey to being a successful Solopreneur. The point at which you’re going to offer your products or services to your email subscribers.
This is both the most exciting and the most nerve-wracking part of the journey. Because until you make your initial offer, you have no idea how people will respond.
You have no idea if anyone will buy from you or not. And let’s face it…your ultimate success as a Solopreneur hinges on whether or not people buy from you.
Which is why this step can be so nerve-racking.
So let’s take a look at some questions you might have about selling your products and services.
And at the bottom of this email you can get access to the free guide: 27 Simple Ways to Increase Online Sales.
WHEN SHOULD YOU OFFER YOUR PRODUCTS OR SERVICES TO YOUR AUDIENCE?
This is 100% up to you!
Some Solopreneurs make an offer immediately when someone subscribes to their list.
This can work.
When I worked as a career coach, I sold coaching services off of one really great guest post. Some people really loved my guest post and they were ready to work with me immediately.
Other Solopreneurs prefer to wait a bit before making their first offer. They want to “warm-up” their email subscribers first, particularly if their product or service is expensive.
That can work as well.
Bottom line is that there’s no right or wrong answer to the question of when to make your offer. Do what feels right and comfortable for you.
However, do NOT wait TOO long to make your first offer. If you wait too long, people start to think of you as “the person who gives lots of great, free information but doesn’t sell anything”.
(and yes, I’ve made this mistake myself)
Remember that you’re operating a business and your email subscribers need to see you as a businessperson.
If you’re not ready to sell right away, you should at least let your subscribers know that you’ll be selling to them soon.
For example. you could include a P.S. in your emails that says something like: “Hey, I know I’ve been sending you a lot of information about Problem X. Well, guess what? In one week I’m going to offer you Solution Y. I know you’re going to love this so be on the lookout right here!”.
That way you set the expectation that you’ll be selling to them soon and build excitement for your offer!
HOW MANY SUBSCRIBERS DO YOU NEED BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR OFFER?
That depends somewhat on what you’re selling. If you need a minimum number of people to buy your service or product (e.g., a group coaching program), then you’ll probably want a few hundred people on your email list before you make an offer.
But if your product or service isn’t dependent on a minimum number of people, then you can start offering as soon as you have a single person signed up.
But there is a problem with offering to a small number of people.
It’s highly possible that no one will buy from you (particularly if your product/service is expensive). Which makes it hard/impossible to determine WHY no one is buying from you.
So even if your product or service isn’t dependent on a minimum number of people, you’re probably best off waiting till you have a few hundred people on your list.
WHAT PRICE SHOULD YOU SET FOR YOUR PRODUCTS OR SERVICES?
Pricing your products or services is hard. Very hard.
Set your prices too low and people will think there’s something wrong with your offer.
Set them too high and people will think you’re crazy and buy from your competitors.
So here are some ideas for how to set your prices:
- Ask people how much they would be willing to pay (your email subscribers or in FB groups)
- Research your competitors to see what they charge
- Offer Pay What You Want when you first launch your product or service to gauge how much people are willing to pay
Chances are you’ll have to adjust your prices at some point. But the three strategies above can help you set your initial prices.
