July 2019 Income Report

In the vein of Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income, I’ve decided to disclose how much money I make each month from my affiliate marketing business.

This is definitely going to be a rollercoaster ride and I don’t expect my income to increase every month.

In fact, I already know that it won’t.

Now, one of the challenges of reporting income from an affiliate marketing business is knowing what income to report when.

Oftentimes, you make a sale in one month, but the money doesn’t arrive to your bank account until 1-2 months later.

Since many companies offer a refund period, they need to make sure the purchase isn’t refunded before they pay you.

On top of that, many companies have a minimum payment threshold and you don’t get paid anything until you cross that threshold.

Which means you may wait several months (or even years!) before receiving payment from a sale.

For now, I’ve decided to disclose income based on the month in which the money is deposited into my bank account since that’s the easiest to keep track of and report.

So without further ado…

JULY 2019 INCOME REPORT

AppSumo - $207.03

So far, most of my affilaite marketing has focused on products from AppSumo.

AppSumo has a tiered commission structure which means that the more you sell, the higher your commissions.

For example, they pay 12% commissions on your first $750 in sales, 15% on the next $750, 20% on the next $750, etc.

My first month, I sold $1491 in products on AppSumo which resulted in $201.15 in affiliate commissions ($750 x .12 + $741 x .15).

I also had a previous balance of $5.88 from when I dabbled in affiliate marketing over a year ago.

OptinMonster - $69.60

In all honesty, this was a “mistake” payment.

I bought a copy of OptinMonster to test it out and see if I wanted to include it on my list of Recommended Tools.

What I didn’t realize is that somewhere along the line, I “cookied myself” which means that I received an affialite commission for my own purchase of OptinMonster.

I had no idea this had happened so I was surprised when I saw a payment of $69.60 in my bank account.

When I realized what happened, I immediately contacted OptinMonster to let them know.

They investigated and confirmed that the payment came from my own purchase.

They told me they had no way to recuparate the money so that I could keep it and they would take it off of any further sales I make of OptinMonster.

While this wasn’t technically an affiliate commission, I decided to report it here since it was money that was deposited into my bank account.

InVideo - $15.00

InVideo is the first tool that I reviewed as part of my affiliate marketing business. (video review here).

In my opinion, InVideo is a really great tool for creating marketing videos or for turning your blog posts into videos.

So I was happy when they opened up their affiliate marketing program and was also happy to add them to my list of recommended tools

Soon after joining, they offered a $15 incentive for a video review of 20 minutes or longer.

While I do not do paid reviews, this felt different since I did the review with no expectation or knowledge of a future incentive.

Total July 2019 Income - $291.63

$291.63 may not seem like a lot of money, particuarly since nearly $70 of that was by mistake.

And trust me, it’s not close enough to what I need to live on.

Still, I’m happy with the amount of money that I made in my first month of affiliate marketing.

I wasn’t sure if I could make ANY money doing this so the fact that I drove nearly $1,500 in sales and received nearly $300 is a positive sign for me!

FUTURE PLANS

For the future, I want to expand beyond promoting just AppSumo products.

While I’ve learned that it’s relatively easy to make some money via AppSumo, I’m also not sure I can make sufficient money by just promoting their products.
