Do you have a bullshit job?

Do you have a bullshit job?

A job that contributes nothing of value to society?

A job that could disappear tomorrow and no one would care or notice?

If so, then I can certainly relate.

I wasted nearly a decade of my life in a variety of bullshit jobs.

I hated going into work, day after day after day, knowing that I’d be doing nothing of value.

That nothing I did would matter of make a difference.

What an awful feeling.

What an awful feeling knowing that if I didn’t show up for work, it wouldn’t matter.

Sure my boss and my co-workers would have noticed that I wasn’t there.

But my being there made no difference to the world, no difference to anyone’s life, nothing.

I still remember, though, what happened, the first time I quit one of my bullshit jobs.

I had been there for 6 years, and while I wasn’t in management, I was the senior person in my workgroup.

When I announced I was quitting, the office went into a panic.

They couldn’t imagine how they could possibly survive without me.

Seriously? Half the time they didn’t have enough work for me, so I’d spend my days surfing the internet.

And yet now the office was going to fall apart without me???

Amazing isn’t it?

They viewed me as irreplaceable yet had no idea that I was spending hours every day mindlessly surfing the internet.

(that’s pretty common in bullshit jobs, by the way)

In fact, they offered me a one-year unpaid sabbatical, telling me I could come back to my job anytime in the next year.

That’s basically unheard of in government work.

I knew the truth though.

I knew that my job was bullshit.

I knew that I was easily replaceable.

I knew that they would get along just fine without me.

That they’d find someone to take over my bullshit job.

Someone who could do those meaningless, bullshit duties just as well as I could.

And mindlessly surf the internet.

That despite their sense of panic over my quitting they’d get along just fine without me.

And they did.

(by the way, I turned down their sabbatical offer…I wanted a clean break from my bullshit job)

So here’s my message to you:

First of all, if you’re in a bullshit job, a job that provides no value to society, you’re not alone.

For example, a survey in the UK found that 37% of workers “say their job is not making a meaningful contribution to the world“.

That’s a lot of people doing a lot of meaningless work.

Secondly, do whatever it takes to leave your bullshit job.

It’s not worth wasting your life in a job that makes no meaningful contribution to the world.

I don’t care how much money you make…get out!

Sadly, the survey of UK workers found that only 53% of those in bullshit jobs had plans to look for a new job in the coming year.

Don’t be like those people.
